SCP-914 Guide for SCP retroBreach

What SCP-914 is doing in this game

SCP-914—“The Clockworks”—is the upgrade engine that shapes so many SCP retroBreach rounds. Located in the LCZ neighborhood that Class-D, Foundation Personnel, and early responders all contest, the machine refines items placed in its intake and returns results from the output based on the selected setting: Rough, Coarse, 1:1, Fine, or Very Fine. In Sandbox Engine’s asymmetrical horror FPS, that refinement loop decides whether your Class-D escape dies in a locked hallway or reaches Gate B with a card that actually opens the path.

This page focuses on practical use. For route context, keep Class-D escape open. For role fundamentals, see how to play.

The five settings (player mindset)

Rough

Expect destructive or heavily downgraded outcomes. You rarely want Rough on a keycard you need. Think “waste / sabotage / curiosity,” not “progress.”

Coarse

Still a downgrade-leaning or harsh refinement space relative to Fine. Newer players accidentally land here while clicking the selector too fast. Always verify the dial before you wind the process.

1:1

Conversion / lateral change territory rather than a clean upgrade ladder. Useful when you understand a specific craft interaction; dangerous when you treat it like Fine.

Fine

The workhorse. Fine is the setting most escape and mid-fight upgrade plans should default to. It aims to improve what you inserted—keycards climbing tiers, items refining upward—without the extreme variance spike of Very Fine. If you remember one rule from this guide: when in doubt, Fine.

Very Fine

High ceiling, high pain. Very Fine is where players chase dramatic upgrades and sometimes lose the item entirely. Depending on interaction rules in a given build, occupying the machine during a hostile setting can also be lethal—community reports frequently warn about dying to Rough/Very Fine style interactions if you are inside when processing hits. Do not stand in the booth for vibes. Drop the item, set the dial, process, step out, collect output.

Because SCP retroBreach is in beta, exact craft tables can shift. The risk philosophy stays stable: Fine for consistency, Very Fine for deliberate gambles.

Keycards: the main reason people come here

Card progression is why 914 decides rounds. Low-level cards found in LCZ become mid and high cards that unlock HCZ/EZ routes and exit infrastructure. A sensible Class-D plan:

  1. Acquire any usable card.
  2. Reach 914 only if the approach is not a shooting gallery.
  3. Upgrade on Fine in the smallest safe batch.
  4. Leave immediately toward your next objective.
  5. Only attempt Very Fine if losing the card does not soft-end your run—or if you are intentionally hunting a rare jump.

Guards and MTF know this loop. If you hear rifles stacking outside, abort. A delayed upgrade beats a spectator cam.

Weapons and other items

914 is not only cards. Players refine guns and gear when the loot pool and settings support it. Still apply the same discipline: do not dump your entire survival kit into Very Fine because a streamer did it once. Process what you can replace. Keep healing outside the gamble when you are already chunked.

Mass-production fantasies (turning the machine into an infinite factory) collide with contested reality: every extra cycle is another broadcast to the server that humans are stacked in LCZ.

Contested 914: play the objective, not the emote lounge

Treat the room like a temporary control point.

  • Clear corners before interacting.
  • Avoid reloading in the open doorway.
  • Do not start a process if an SCP audio cue is already on top of you.
  • If allied humans arrive, clarify intent fast—friendly fire and fragile early neutrality wipe more runs than the dial does.
  • After output appears, pocket it and rotate; camping the output booth is how Chaos Insurgency, GOC, or anomalies farm you.

Anomaly players should read this section as a hunting guide: 914 camps are free information. See play as SCP.

Mode-specific notes

Containment Breach — 914 remains a multi-faction lighthouse; expect mixed traffic. Details: Containment Breach.
Class-D Riot — Inmates may arrive armed earlier; security often rushes to deny upgrades before the riot snowballs.
Council Rescue — Objective gravity may pull MTF and combat toward O5 problems, but 914 still creates gear spikes for whoever can spare the rotate. Details: Council Rescue.

Common failures (and the fix)

  • Wrong setting selected — Look at the dial every time; muscle memory clicks lie.
  • Processing while inside — Exit the booth; do not become the refinement.
  • Greed chaining Very Fine — Take the Fine win and leave.
  • Sound camping — If you must hold the room, hold an angle outside the obvious doorway.
  • Ignoring the rest of the facility — A max card in a dead run still loses if Gate B is locked down and you have no plan from escape Class-D.

914 and the cosmetic economy

Upgrades do not spend TIX. They create better round outcomes that earn TIX through kills, escapes, and wins. That is the healthy loop while active codes lists no verified promo codes. Spend cosmetics later via earn TIX; spend attention now on the dial.

Quick reference

SettingTypical player intent
RoughAvoid for needed cards
CoarseAvoid accidental downgrades
1:1Special conversions, not default upgrades
FineDefault upgrade path
Very FineHigh-risk high-reward gambles

Return to the guides hub after you internalize Fine-first discipline. SCP-914 rewards calm operators and punishes tourists who treat Clockworks like a carnival booth.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for SCP retroBreach players.

Which SCP-914 setting should I use most?

Fine. It is the consistent upgrade setting for keycards and many item refinements.

Is Very Fine worth it?

Sometimes, when you can afford to lose the item and you need a big jump. It is a gamble, not a default.

Can SCP-914 kill you?

Community reports warn that being inside during dangerous settings can be lethal. Put items in, process from safety, then collect output.

Where is SCP-914?

In the LCZ area of the facility. Exact room paths vary by your approach, but expect contested traffic.

Should I upgrade during a gunfight?

No. Clear or leave. A half-finished upgrade with your corpse on the floor helps the other team.

Does 914 cost TIX?

No. TIX is cosmetic currency. 914 changes items during the round.
