Keycards Guide

Why keycards win more rounds than aim

In SCP retroBreach, a Level 3 card on a mediocre shot still beats a Desert Eagle freeloader stuck in LCZ. Keycards gate checkpoints, armories, chambers, and late warhead / command spaces. This guide explains how to climb access, when to use SCP-914, and how each faction should treat cards. Continue with the Items Hub, weapons, and Factions Hub.

Access ladder (practical reading)

Exact door tables can shift with Sandbox Engine updates, but the ladder stays readable:

Level 1 — Soft LCZ offices and early containment-adjacent doors. First pickup for Class-D.
Level 2 — Broader Light Containment routing and minor secure rooms.
Level 3 — Checkpoint power between LCZ / HCZ / EZ flows; the card that turns escapes real.
Level 4 — Heavy doors, rarer natural spawns, armory-grade access; worth team calls.
Level 5 — Top command / warhead style privileges and mode-critical rooms (Council Rescue fantasies love these).

If two teammates each hold mid cards, trade up so one person can open while the other watches SCP-173.

Where cards come from

  • Ground spawns on shelves, desks, and containment-adjacent props in LCZ and HCZ.
  • Corpses of Security, MTF, Foundation, CI, and unlucky scientists.
  • SCP-914 upgrades when dial settings cooperate.
  • Loadouts on elite spawns (some MTF / CI / mode VIPs start elevated).

Top-level natural spawns are scarce by design. Hoarding a Level 5 while three allies die at a Level 3 gate is how Chaos Insurgency wins without shooting.

SCP-914 card etiquette

Bring a watcher. Announce the dial. Fine / 1:1 when you understand local recipes; avoid Coarse on your only checkpoint card. SCPs—especially SCP-106 and SCP-966—farm AFK scientists here. If LCZ decontamination ticks, take the card you have and leave.

914 also feeds the weapons climb; decide whether this visit is for doors or for guns before you insert items.

Zone-specific advice

LCZ — Grab anything. Pair Level 2+ with a Makarov or better before pushing checkpoints.
HCZ — Expect SCP-096 and SCP-106 pressure near good cards. Sweep as a duo.
EZ — Cards enable Gate B logistics and surface loops; share before the fight, not after the wipe.
Surface — GOC and Serpent’s Hand confuse IFF; do not drop your Level 4 to “prove trust” mid-firefight.

Faction card doctrine

Class-D — Card before gun when both are equally distant. Escape math starts with doors.
Foundation — You often spawn soft but card-valuable; distribute to MTF.
MTF / Security — Deny CI upgrades; keep a runner with Level 3+ glued to the stack.
Chaos Insurgency — Dual purpose: open extracts and arm Class-D escorts.
Playable SCPs — You may bypass many locks (SCP-106), but camping card rooms stops human snowballs. See playable SCPs.

Synergy with guns

A Saiga-12 without a checkpoint card is a loud closet. An HK416 with Level 4 access rewrites HCZ. Climb cards and guns together—read the weapons tier list so you know which crates justify detours.

Anti-SCP habits while swiping

Never all look at the reader panel when SCP-173 is uncontained. Never face-check dark booths for “maybe Level 4” when SCP-096 audio is near. Never stand wounded in a doorway for SCP-106. Swipe, move, cover—repeat.

Common keycard mistakes

Silent hoarding. Upgrading the team’s only mid card on Coarse. Leaving Level 3 on a corpse in LCZ while you chase TIX shop menus. Pushing Gate B with Level 1 pride. Ignoring 914 because “cards will spawn” (they might, on the wrong side of decontamination).

Drill: three-round card focus

Round 1 as Class-D: escape with Level 3, guns optional. Round 2 as Security: ensure your squad always has a designated card carrier. Round 3 as CI: open an extract using only looted cards, no spawn gifts.

Master this page and the Items Hub before arguing meta on the SCP tier list—most “SCP too strong” complaints start as “we never opened the door.”

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for SCP retroBreach players.

What keycard level do I need to leave LCZ comfortably?

Aim for Level 3 style checkpoint access. Lower cards help early, but mid access is what makes escapes consistent.

Should I upgrade keycards in SCP-914?

Yes when guarded and when you can afford a bad roll. Never Coarse your only checkpoint card in a panic.

Who should hold the highest card?

Usually the player best at staying alive in the middle of the stack—not the lone wolf looting HCZ alone.

Do SCPs need keycards?

Less than humans, but denying cards still prevents MTF and CI from rotating freely.

Is Level 5 always required?

Only for top-tier rooms and some mode objectives. Many rounds are decided by Level 3–4 logistics long before Level 5 matters.

Can TIX buy better keycards?

No. TIX is cosmetic. Cards come from spawns, bodies, loadouts, and SCP-914.
